Spinodal decomposition of chemically reactive binary mixtures.

چکیده
We simulate the influence of a reversible isomerization reaction on the phase segregation process occurring after spinodal decomposition of a deeply quenched regular binary mixture, restricting attention to systems wherein material transport occurs solely by diffusion. Our theoretical approach follows a diffuse-interface model of partially miscible binary mixtures wherein the coupling between reaction and diffusion is addressed within the frame of nonequilibrium thermodynamics, leading to a linear dependence of the reaction rate on the chemical affinity. Ultimately, the rate for an elementary reaction depends on the local part of the chemical potential difference since reaction is an inherently local phenomenon. Based on two-dimensional simulation results, we express the competition between segregation and reaction as a function of the Damköhler number. For a phase-separating mixture with components having different physical properties, a skewed phase diagram leads, at large times, to a system converging to a single-phase equilibrium state, corresponding to the absolute minimum of the Gibbs free energy. This conclusion continues to hold for the critical phase separation of an ideally perfectly symmetric binary mixture, where the choice of final equilibrium state at large times depends on the initial mean concentration being slightly larger or less than the critical concentration.

Monte Carlo simulations of phase separation in chemically reactive binary mixtures.
We present Monte Carlo simulations of a binary mixture simultaneously undergoing spinodal decomposition and the chemical reaction A — B. The competing processes give rise to novel, steady-state pattern formation with domain size scaling with reaction rate to a power, s, which equals the domain growth exponent, a, in the absence of chemical reactions. Our findings support recent numerical simula...

We present results from molecular dynamics simulations for the non-equilibrium evolution of a binary fluid in the presence of a wetting surface. We study the pattern dynamics which results when a homogeneous fluid mixture is quenched to temperatures both above and below the critical temperature. Our extensive computer simulation results are in agreement with arguments based on Ginzburg-Landau t...
متن کاملChemically Controlled Pattern Formation in Phase - Separating Materials
The role of chemical reactions in the selection of patterns in phase-separating mixtures is presented. Linearized theory and computer simulation show that the initial long-wavelength instability characteristic of spinodal decomposition is suppressed by chemical reactions, which restrict domain growth to intermediate length scales even in the late stages of phase separation. Our findings suggest...
متن کاملSpinodal Decomposition for the Cahn-hilliard Equation
The Cahn-Hilliard equation is a fourth-order parabolic partial differential equation that is one of the leading models for the study of phase separation in isothermal, isotropic, binary mixtures, such as molten alloys. When a spatially homogeneous alloy is rapidly quenched in a physical experiment, a fine-grained decomposition into two distinct phases is frequently observed; this phenomenon is ...
متن کاملLattice Boltzmann Study of Velocity Behaviour in Binary Mixtures Under Shear
We apply lattice Boltzmann methods to study the relaxation of the velocity profile in binary fluids under shear during spinodal decomposition. In simple fluids, when a shear flow is applied on the boundaries of the system, the time required to obtain a triangular profile is inversely proportional to the viscosity and proportional to the square of the size of the system. We find that the same be...
